I’ve spent quite some time on picking up the device I’d like to buy. The primary thing was a cell phone. I wanted something like my good old Sony Ericsson P910i with better display, faster processor and more feature packed. As there’s no other option today as the Windows Mobile I had to stick with PocketPC. The new UIQ3 (for example used in P990i) is a dying operation system, which lacks applications support as it’s predecessor. Palm OS died already. That’s not good.
In my geographic location you can get your hands on PocketPC devices mainly from companies like Acer, Asus, eTen, Fujitsu Siemens, HP, HTC and Mio. Remove the unreliable I already know of - Acer and FS, merge with the following requirement list and let’s look on the results:
- Fast processor (no chance for TI OMAP 200MHz!)
- GSM/GPRS/EDGE
- GPS (SIRF III)
- WiFi
- No keyboard
- 3G/UMTS
From today’s offer there’s not many devices that can fullfil all the requirements. I liked the Asus P535 but it lacks 3G/UMTS and what’s even worse - there’s no EDGE either. Same applies to eTen Glofiish X500 and the new model X800 which will feature 3G as well as a VGA display is scheduled for late summer. To make the long story short, as far as I know all the models except one are lacking one or more of the features above today (Jun/07).
And the winner is… HTC P3600 Trinity. Except for the weaker GPS chipset (which is somewhere inbetween of SIRF III and the previous generation) it has all I need. I only hope it will all work. I’ve ordered it today and I can’t wait to open the box… Although before it arrives there’s still a lot of things to do…
Mine will be black =)
