Working Pocket Skype for Trinity
After unpacking the Trinity from the box the first thing i was about to do was fulfilling my old dream - to perform a pure VoIP call from my PDA. Trinity looks strong enough with it’s ARM9 v4 400Mhz processor and Skype is the easiest choice. I will get back to the SIP and other IM clients in my future logs.
As my HTC is still brand new with absolutely no apps installed on it (except for the locale provided by the supplier that can be turned off) i expected the Skype app to work as a charm. The WiFi setup in my home WPA-PSK environment worked on the first try. I was really surprised. After that i went to the Skype download page and downloaded the latest version. It was Skype 2.2.0.36 from 11th June 2007 - the first gold release of the 2.2 branch. It worked really nicely. I loved the Skype menu on the Today screen. But when I was about to make a call, it always failed. Later on i realised that this officialy does not support Samsung based PDAs:
If you have a device with ARM 9 v4 Processor for example: 32bit Samsung: S3C2410, SC32442 and S3C2440, or IntelStrong ARM SA-1110, then calling is not supported by Skype for Windows Mobile in the 2.2 Gold Release. However, you will still be able to use chat to keep in touch with your contacts.
These includes, but are not limited to: E-TEN Glofiish X500, E-TEN M500, E-TEN M600, E-TEN M700, HP iPAQ rx5900, HP rx4000 Series, HP iPAQ rx3700 Series, HTC TyTN, HTC P3600, i-mate JASJAM, Qtek 9600, SPV M700, MDA Vario II / v1605, 8525 / M3100 / Trion, Dopod D810, Dopod 838, Dopod P100, Acer n311, Mio P550 Digi-Walker
Hope we will have official support in future versions. There’s still a chance to get Trinity to actually place/receive Skype calls and not just limit the functionality to chat: Get older version! While Skype does not offer older versions for download, you can find them with a Google search.
I personally collected this load of versions:
- SkypeForPocketPC-2.0.0.51-LowCPU.cab
- SkypeForPocketPC-2.1.0.65.exe
- SkypeForPocketPC-2.1.0.66.exe
- SkypeForPocketPC-2.2.0.18-Beta.cab - works with P3600!!!
- SkypeForPocketPC-2.2.0.20-Beta.exe
- SkypeForPocketPC-2.2.0.36.exe
While only the 2.2.0.18 and the 2.0.0.51 worked for me I’ve sticked with the 2.2.0.18 as it has neat feature of appearing in the “today” screen. See pic:

If you’ve never installed a CAB file on your PocketPC before just copy it to your PDA with ActiveSync Explorer and then locate the file with File Explorer on your PDA and click on it. The installation will run.
Hopefully the next version of Skype will support Trinity as well as other Samsung based PDAs. Until then use the Pocket Skype 2.2.0.18 Beta!
Jan08 Edit: Make sure you read on the follow up: Pocket Skype 2.2.0.37 vs Trinity

Great info and links. The folks at Skype worked hard to remove any links to versions prior to 2.2.0.36, which is frustrating because they could have left the version prior still available for Samsung-based users who would unkowingly update to 2.2.0.36 only to find out they needed to downgrade to restore Skype’s most critical functio… makin voice calls. What good is ‘chat only’???? Skype is about VOIP where the V is for voice, not text. geesh. BTW, I’m using 2.2.0.20 on my P3600 without any problems again now.

Nice… Was linked to here via the official Skype forums after I installed the latest build (2.2.0.220) and found that my Hermes (TyTn) was crashing out whenever I tried to make a voice call… Not very clever!
Thanks to you, I easily got the last latest working build for my phone and now I’m making calls over HSDPA 3G again. Nice one mate

Hi,
I was lost about functionality of Skype on E-TEN M700,
I’ve tried about 12 different versions (from various sources)
and couldn’t make it working.
It closed down on startup by itself, or only chat worked.
Then I installed
SkypeForPocketPC-2.0.0.51-LowCPU.cab
from this web and all works fine (finally).

Gr8 work getting all the older versions and offering them here! Bravo!
Used to “play” with the v 2.1.0.65 on my Mio P550 and worked fine! Tried the 2.2.0.18 which also works just fine but seems a bit “heavier” for my device butt I’ll probably keep on using it until Skype decides to resolve this frustrating voice encoder incompatibility so that we can also benefit from faster and better audio.

Can someone post a link or email me the exe [zip it first] or cab file for version 2.2.0.20 for SMARTPHONE…. Please!!
The PPC versions posted here won’t work with my iPAQ 510 Smartphone v6. The gold release v2.2.0.36 for smartphone also doesnt work with the 510, but the .20 version does [I’m told].
Thanks,
Brett

October 8th, 2007 at 1:14 am
Thanks so much for the post on this. Just got it working on my 8525. Not sure why Skype is so unresponsive in getting their latest version for Windows Mobile working on theARM 9 v4 or at least pointing us toward a version that does work. It doesn’t seem like it should be that hard.
October 9th, 2007 at 2:39 pm
thanks for this,
for those that are curious, it seems to work also with the HTC P3600i, which is the asia-pacific upgraded model of the trinity essentially.
so this asks the question, what changed from beta .18 to .20 to break skype for this processor?
November 4th, 2007 at 8:50 pm
Thank you. It works perfect on my htc tytn.
November 14th, 2007 at 5:41 pm
You are turely a lifesaver… I looked everywhere for a version that would work on my Toshiba E750… both the .18 and .20 versions work… I was headed to Europe and thought I would have to be without calling ability for my short visit, but you have enabled me to ’skype’ anyone world wide when I travel… The latest (.37) hotfix version of 2.2 does not work with any processor that uses the ARM v4 instruction set… but the beta versions I have mentioned DO.
For other owners of this equipment I have found that a standard 2.5mm plug cell phone headset works GREAT with this PDA using a $3.99 stereo adapter that makes the standard cell phone plug work in the unusual 3.5mm jack on this excellent, but discontinued Toshiba…
Thanks so much for your help.

Ipaq H5550 - Skype 2.2.0.18 works perfectly when the latest version doesn’t - also worth knowing you need a later version of activesync (4.5) to install skype on older versions of windows mobile than 5.0
Thanks to this page I’ve ended hours of frustration - trying to get the damn thing to work!!

I have downloaded the CAB for version 2.2.0.37 on my HTC Trinity. It seems to work adequately with voice and chat. Still no video… Not really holding my breath.

Skype 2.2.0.18 will work on the htc p3600, but you have to use the wired headset which is really lame. I have tried 3 stereo a2dp headsets with Skype and all of them will not work. I recently got the Jabra BT8040 also will not work. I wish someone would fix this so that I can use the p3600 with Skype on a Bluetooth headset and not have to have all the wires. If anyone knows a real fix please e-mail me iterateit@gmail.com and let me know. And yes I have tried all the sound redirect stuff out there and none of them work not even the stuff on xda developers site.

I have an HTC Touch and the problem I’m experiencing is the sound coming out of the rear speaker (loudspeaker). I have tried the following versions but nothing has worked:- SkypeforPocketPC 2.1.0.66; 2.2.0.18-Beta and 2.2.0.37 (latest).
Does anyone have any idea which, if any, versions of Skype Mobile actually work on the HTC Touch?
As I say it’s only a sound out of the rear speaker not the microphone and earpiece which is a problem - everything else seems to be OK.
April 26th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Thank You.
Now I can use my HTC Touch (Bell Canada) for VoIP Skype calls.

May 14th, 2008 at 6:32 am
2.2.0.18 working great with my new HTC 6800. Latest version didn’t work
May 29th, 2008 at 5:00 am
Hi - I copied a download of 2.2.0.18 to my Samsung SPH-i325 Smartphone and launched it via file explorer to receive the message: “Installation was unsuccessful. The program or setting cannot be installed because it does not ahve sufficient system permissions.” Any ideas why this happened and ways around it. The reason I was trying to install this version of Skype is because it seems it would work with Windows Mobile 6.0.

Eten X600 wm6 fr , skype work well just with 2.0.0.51 …

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! This is the way to fix problems with Skype Mobile and Sprint Phones. Been trying to resolve the issue for sometime. Working with registry edit to find hidden file blocks and sound muting which Sprint may be (purposefully or inadvertently) doing with its “proprietary” software. Will post any results if successful. THANKS FOR ARCHIVE POSTING THESE!!!

Didn’t include in above post, but used the SkypeForPocketPC-2.2.0.18-Beta.cab (Posted above) with Sprint Mogul on 06-09-2008. ROM v. 3.35.651.2 ROM date 02/22/08 and Windows Mobile 6.0 Pro CE OS 5.2.1629 (Build 18136.0.4.8). Tested and Confirmed.

Did theSprint Mogul and Windows Mobile 6.0 Pro to skype over wi-fi only or both wi-fi and the Sprint network also? Either way, that’s pretty fantastic!
